Art challenges is challenging. It requires decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, and reflection, all skills necessary to succeed in nearly any given field. The courses at Ridgeview are designed to develop these skills in students and foster creative thinking. Projects typically begin with art history or a blind challenge activity. With information about what has already been done, students are shown techniques and processes to use to forge forward and create something that reflects a given theme. Themes for the beginning levels such as Art 1 and 2, typically address an element or principal of art. In Art 3 and 4 students further develop their creative thinking and problem solving skills with more abstract themes such as the figure, place, metaphor, and humor. Mass Media courses reflect these ideals as well from a more technical standpoint. In the mass media courses, students hone their skills in digital creative programs such as the adobe suit, sketch up, and scratch.
